چکیده

If the classical inference relation is considered, AC is clearly not deductively valid. Moreover, adding AC to Classical Logic (CL) as an extra inference rule would result in the trivial logic. This is called the /irrelevance problem/ towards abduction. In order to provide a nice formal account of abduction processes, this problem has to be faced. In this lunch talk, I will present several adaptive logics (AL) that satisfactorily deal with the irrelevance problem: they only allow for the relevant instances of AC. More specifically, I will present:

A formal explication of the search for explanations: the adaptive logics approach to abductive reasoning

Most logic–based approaches characterize abduction as a kind of backwards deduction plus additional conditions, which means that a number of conditions is specified that enable one to decide whether or not a particular abductive inference is sound (one of those conditions may for example be that abductive consequences have to be compatible with the background theory). Despite the fact that thes...

Adaptive Logics for Abduction and the Explication of Explanation-Seeking Processes

In this paper, I illustrate the main characteristics of abductive reasoning processes by means of an example from the history of the sciences. The example is taken from the history of chemistry and concerns a very small episode from Lavoisier’s struggle with the ‘air’ obtained from mercury oxide. Eventually, this struggle would lead to the discovery of oxygen. I also show that Lavoisier’s reaso...

Ampliative Adaptive Logics and the Foundation of Logic-Based Approaches to Abduction

In this paper, we propose a reconstruction of logic-based approaches to abductive reasoning in terms of ampliative adaptive logics. The advantages of this reconstruction are important: the resulting logics have a proper proof theory (that leads to justified conclusions even for undecidable fragments), they nicely integrate deductive and abductive steps, and they are much closer to natural reaso...

Adaptive Logics and the Integration of Induction and Deduction

In this paper, I argue that it is typical of many scientific reasoning processes that they involve the integrated use of inductive and deductive steps. I moreover illustrate with examples from the sciences that the distinction between induction and deduction is context-dependent— an inference treated in one context as deductive may in a different context may be treated as inductive—and that the...

From inheritance relation to nonaxiomatic logic

Non-Axiomatic Reasoning System is an adaptive system that works with insu cient knowledge and resources. At the beginning of the paper, three binary term logics are de ned. The rst is based only on an inheritance relation. The second and the third suggest a novel way to process extension and intension, and they also have interesting relations with Aristotle's syllogistic logic. Based on the thr...
